FINE WINE PRICE INDICES

JANUARY 2022

Date : January 9, 2021

A crazy 2021

After 2 to 3 years of near stagnation in prices, 2021 will mark a turning point in the world of fine wines. It is a record year for all regions and vintages, prices have never been so high.

  • Bordeaux:
    • WD Bordeaux 100, the biggest market index available for Bordeaux wines (100 wines over 14 vintages, 1.9 billion euros) is up by 16.7% in 2021.
    • All previous records were broken.
    • No vintage is an exception to this increase in 2021, in particular 2005 (+ 21.5%) and 2009 (+ 19.7%).
    • How to explain the strong price increase?
      • Strong demand in the form of catching up after a very poor 2020 in terms of turnover.
      • Low releases by Bordeaux châteaux onto the market. The majority of players confirm a significant drop in allocations from the “grands crus”.
    • The value of available stock from the last 16 vintages has fallen sharply to €326 million, which does not suggest a lull in prices in 2022.
  • Burgundy:
    • The price evolution of the great Burgundies is just staggering. With production volumes still declining and strong demand, the price of the most searched wines has blown up: +58% for DRC, +29.3% for the “grands crus”!
  • Rhône: strong growth in the Rhône market index (+ 14.9%). Note the impressive progress of Rayas (not included in the index): +230% in 2021.
  • Champagne: while the market was used to stagnating prices for major Champagne brands, 2021 will also mark the return of price increases (+ 9.6%).
  • The great wines of Italy and California follow the same upward trend in 2021 with respective increases of 16.2 and 30.2%. (modifié)
